Just a note on the Volt/Ampera, the petrol engine does not recharge the battery (the only way to recharge it is to plug it into an electrical socket, although re-gen braking does go back to the battery). When the battery is depleted the petrol engine then powers a 50KW (I believe) electrical generator which is connected directly to the electric motor.
